The atmospheric VFX in Oxenfree II: Lost Signals are mostly focused on "mood." There is a sophisticated layering of 2D and 3D effects that gives the town of Camena a heavy, maritime, and slightly "haunted" feel. Some elements include -
1. Multi-Layered Volumetric Fog Card Setup - a more robust fog system to create a sense of scale and Pacific Northwest gloom with Z-Depth Layering, which isn't just a screen overlay; it's layered between the foreground, midground, and background planes. This allows characters to be partially occluded by "rolling" mist, grounding them in the 2D-on-3D environment. The fog density is driven by a moving noise texture that simulates slow, organic movement rather than a static cloud.
2. Particle Weather Systems - The rain in Camena is a mix of vertical streaks and "mist" particles that respond to the wind direction. Ember & Dust Motes are in "hot" zones or near portals, with additive-blended embers that float with random jittering, giving the air a thick, "charged" quality.
